Carter Ackermann

"Jon just came by to check on me this morning." I said as I got him a cup of water and handed it to him. "Here you go. Now that Daphne is occupied I'm going to go change into my hunting gear before I start cooking." I told him and hurried into my room, closing the door as I started to get dressed into something else.

"You know, she's fine here. You don't have to come by and check on her. Not that you're... not welcome or anything." 



"I just wanted to see how she was. Brooke said I wasn't interrupting anything." 



"Nope. It's just kinda early, that's all." 



"Sorry. Didn't mean to disturb you." 



"No worries." 

I got myself together and came back out and I could tell something was off. "What would you guys like for breakfast?" I smiled.

"Whatever you make will be fine. You don't have to cook for me though, I can just go to the mess hall." 

"You came by to check on me, I want to. It won't take long, I promise."

"Alright, sure. Do you want any help?" 



"Why don't you sit. I can help her if she needs it." 

I looked at Carter "But, you're holding Daphne right now, I don't mind if Jon helps." I said, not really sure what I should say. This was such a fucking disaster and it was my fault.

I did not want him in my fucking kitchen cooking my breakfast with her. "It's fine. I can set Daphne in her seat while I help you." 

"It's fine, I don't need any help. It's just breakfast." I said and started the fire in the stove, While it heated up I gathered up the eggs, some left over deer, and we had some berries too.

"Breakfast smells really good," I said to her, my eyes still on Jon. I knew I was being overly obvious but I couldn't help it. Least I hadn't slipped and called her baby yet.

"Thank you." It took a few more minutes but everything finally finished and I served them and then sat down myself. 

"Help yourself," I said, holding Daphne in one arm and making myself a plate.

We sat there and ate for a few minutes "How is it?" I asked.

"It's great. You're a good cook."



"She always has been."



"I know."

Oh my god, this was ridiculous. "Well, I thank you both. I'm much better at hunting them these days than cooking though."

"I haven't seen you hunt, do you go very often?"



She's pretty amazing. I've never seen her miss a shot."



"Don't think I was asking you, but thanks for the info," I said and forced out a smile.



"You're welcome. Brooke, I'm looking forward to our next hunting trip."

I felt like smacking both of them right now. "Thanks, Jon. So am I." I looked at Carter "Yeah, I go as often as I can."

"I'd love to go with you sometime."

"Sure." I said and then scarfed down the rest of my food. I had to get out of here, the tension was about to boil over.

"Let me take care of the dishes Brooke, you cooked." 



"How sweet," I said then bit back the rest of my response, finishing my water. 

Gee, guys. Thanks for the most terrible and awkward breakfast ever. "Thanks, Carter." I said and stood up from the table "I need to get going. I had no luck yesterday, hopefully today is better."

"Want me to go with you? I can do the dishes later." 



"Or I'm free right now, if you wanted someone to go with you," I said, unable to hold back a smirk when I heard a plate crack. 

My patience was wearing thin but this was my fault so I really didn't have a right to be too pissed. "I survived the whole winter by myself so I think I can manage just one day." 

"What time will you be home?" 

"Around the edge of dark."
