Chad Simmons

I shrugged a little. "Hard to think about being happy again."

"I understand...but you make me happy. You know...I'd like to think of you as a friend."

"I wouldn't mind that. How do I make you happy though?"

"Nice people usually do and you're a nice person. You stayed with me when you didn't have to."

"Well I'm the one that brought you there. I needed to make sure you were okay. And you're from the other camp... people were getting all bent out of shape over everything."

"You still didn't have to stay if you didn't want though. Some people wouldn't have."

I shrugged a little. "It's not like I had anything better to do. I don't know why but... I just had to make sure you were okay."

Oh... "Well, I'm glad you did." I said "Thanks for the walk but I should probably head back now. I just wanted to tell you thanks for everything you did for me."

"You're welcome. And thanks for coming by. You're... you're welcome anytime okay?"

"Alright. Thanks Chad, goodnight." I said and thought about giving him a friendly hug but held back. I smiled and waved a little then headed home.

I watched her go until she was out of sight then headed back to the cabin. I walked in and Owen was there making something to eat. "Hey."

"Hey." I said as he shut the door behind him "Cody didn't come back with you?"

"No, we ran into some asshole from her camp. She didn't hang around much longer after that. She said she had to get back."

"What the hell? Why?"

I shrugged. "I don't know. Probably cause I'm an idiot. She said she just wanted to thank me though."

"An idiot, huh? Alright, what did you do?"

"She said I didn't have to stay with her, in the infirmary you know, but that it was really nice of me. I told her I hadn't had anything better to do anyway."

Oh my God. I couldn't help but facepalm on that one. "Please tell me you're fucking with me right now. A woman thanks you for saving her life and you told her you didn't have anything better to do? What the hell, Chad?"

"I... It's just what came out. I just opened my mouth and that is what came out. I did say I had to make sure she was okay. I don't think that made it better though...." I sighed and sat down. "Yeah I really fucking said that."

"Of course not. You basically said you had to make sure she was okay because you didn't have anything better to do. Damn." I sighed "We've been secluded too long. You're way off your game."

"Yeah or something." I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. "Do you think she's gonna talk to me again? I told her she was welcome anytime but... that was after I pretty much told her... I stayed with her because I was bored.... Owen I'm fucking retarded."

"Dude...yeah you kinda are. If I had a cute girl like her coming around for me I sure as hell wouldn't say something like that. I'm not blind and I know you aren't. Man, you burned her good."

"You think I don't fucking know that? It's not like I can call her and say I'm sorry. And I can't go over there because I don't feel like getting the shit kicked out of me."

"Maybe she'll come back sometime then...ya know if she doesn't have anything better to do."

"You are such a dick," I said and punched him in the shoulder.
